Swimming pools and spas need to be kept crystal clean. No one likes swimming in a dirty pool. Pools can be breeding grounds for algae and bacteria, and debris tends to accumulate in the water if it’s not promptly removed. A lot of work is required to clean a pool. The water has to be balanced, chlorine must be added, leaves have to be scooped, the pool has to be covered and uncovered. The list goes on and on.

Chlorinating a pool is one of the most important of these cleaning tasks, as well as one of the hardest to get right. Chlorine sterilizes a pool by killing all the bacteria and other germs that try to grow in the water. Properly chlorinating a pool or spa is essential to keep the water safe. Too little chlorine and the water won’t be sanitized; too much will give the pool an awful odor and burn the eyes of swimmers.

Two methods are commonly used to chlorinate a pool. The first is the old-fashioned method and is more difficult. In this method the pool owner mixes up a batch of packaged chlorine and water. Rubber gloves and goggles must be worn. Once the chlorine mix is ready, it is added to the pool and is allowed to mix with the water. This has to be done up to four times a week if the pool is being used regularly.

The second method commonly used is a chlorinator. These handy little gadgets electronically chlorinate a pool. They turn simple salts into chlorine. They are hands-free and low maintenance.

Chlorinators have other advantages over the old-fashioned chlorine-mixing method. A chlorinator eliminates the need to buy chlorine and keep it stored at the house. This eliminates a potent household danger. They are easy to use and adjust; the amount of chlorine can be changed by turning a dial.

No additional plumbing is needed to install a chlorinator. Nor are any adaptors required. The cost of operating a chlorinator is relatively low. They rarely need repairs, but it is easy to find parts and get service when they do. Many chlorinators also have automatic LED lights to let the pool owner know when an inspection is needed.

The Aquarite T cell 15 and the Hayward T cell 15 are both really good chlorinators. A T cell 15 chlorinator is long-lived and is easy to repair. T cell 15 cleaning is also an easy process. Another good chlorinator is a T Cell 15 Goldline.

Many chlorinators are also available that will work with other cells. Some will operate a T cell 3, T cell 5 or T cell 9 in addition to, or instead of, a T cell 15.

Keeping a pool clean is a big job, but using a chlorinator is an easy and inexpensive way to reduce the workload and increase the time that can be spent actually enjoying the pool.
