Team Play and The Life Lessons Learned: It’s All About Collaboration

After attending a 12 year old Little League travel team game on Saturday, it made me start to think of the values that this organization has given to children’s lives and about the sacrifices that parents make to have their children participate. Just to mention three big benefits that I see from kids participating:

  • Learning about team work

As I watched my grandson John’s team on the field and in the dug out these guys were in-tuned to one another. There were some great plays and some bad plays, but they kept on patting each other on the back and encouraging each other either way. I saw the team all gather at the pitcher’s mound a number of times to give each other encouragement and I thought about how these kids were learning a life lesson to encourage and praise others.

Another thought I had was it takes a team. Even if your team has a great pitcher and catcher the rest of the team has to do their job right or you won’t win the game! It’s all about everyone keeping their eyes on the ball and working hard- even if the score is not in your team’s favor. That’s another great life lesson. It’s not about winning or losing, but how hard you try knowing in your heart that you gave it your personal best for the team.

  • Learning about adults (as coaches or parents)

Kids learn about adults from their coaches and their parent’s behavior at the practices and at the games. Some coaches just want to win no matter what child’s self esteem has to be sacrificed, but fortunately the majority of coaches understand the real reasons they’re there. It’s to have fun, teach skills and especially to build self-esteem in each child. To make each child feel like he or she is an important part of the team- a feeling they will sometimes carry forward into their adult lives. Coaches have a big responsibility.

The second part of learning about adults is watching parents. Kids notice parent’s behavior on the field, in the stands and after the game. It’s up to the parents to show their child what Little League is all about and to lead by their example. This is the way kids learn. It’s about how to take winning and losing on the baseball field and turn it into a life lesson.

Little League is a Win Win for all involved. So many of life’s lessons for all of us!
