New Vice Chancellor at Meerut University
Uttar Pradesh governor rector BL Joshi on Friday accepted the resignation of Prof. HC Gupta, vice-chancellor of Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. The governor appointed VIP Garg, principal, IP College, Bulandshahr as the vice-chancellor in the post until further notice.
Professor Gupta had resigned on September 1 after some student leaders broke into his office and tried to intimidate him.They demanded an increase in the number of seats in the university and its affiliated colleges, which waved in the school for a month. Vice Chancellor’s assertion was that the state government can increase the seats and not the university.
A furious Prof Gupta has resigned after the incident. His resignation was accepted then not by the governor. The latter has even invited Dr. Gupta to reconsider its decision. However, Professor Gupta has remained fixed on his condition, after the governor accepted his resignation.
“Vipin Garg officiating as Vice-Chancellor until UACC regular rector is appointed by the governor,” said GB Patnaik, Principal Secretary to the Governor.
Prof. Gupta, an alumnus of IIT-Delhi, had an excellent academic record and was said to be hard, leading to declines of the noisy student leaders supported by local politicians.
“Most of these students self-appointed leaders are not university students. Their main activity is making headlines across ruckus and use it to get government contracts. These leaders also help politicians in their manifestations and protests, “said the teacher.
Noises of student leaders of the state universities of UP is a common feature of 2006, when the ratio Lyngdoh Committee on the elections of the students’ took place. For five years, the campuses were silent, but now the noise is raising its ugly head again. Recently, some student leaders belong to a political party had tried to abuse of Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor, Professor MK Mishra.
Prof. Gupta has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Meerut University, June 29, 2011. The governor will now form a search committee will select a panel of 3-5 names and recommend to the Governor for final selection. On August 29, stormed turbulent elements into his office and tried to attack him. He fainted and was rescued by police. The university has over 450 affiliated schools in the western UP with a total student strength of over 5,00,000. Heavy police were deployed on the campus after the departure of the rector.
