Combat Fatigue Naturally

By: Margaret L. Priddy

Fatigue is a feeling of overwhelming tiredness or exhaustion. Someone suffering with fatigue may feel the need to rest due to a lack of energy or strength. Fatigue may result from extensive work, lack of sleep, stressful life situations, boredom, or lack of exercise. Fatigue is considered to be a symptom and not an ailment or disease. Trying to identify the source of the symptom can be difficult. Some routine things that can trigger fatigue are: disease, infection, medication side effects, medical treatment (chemotherapy), anxiety and depression.

Homeopathic or alternative treatment can be effective in combating fatigue. Some forms of treatment can include those found below.

  • Ginseng: is an herb that has been used in Asia for centuries to increase energy and combat fatigue.
  • Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NADH)
  • L-Carnitine: Carnitine, found in nearly all body cells, is responsible for transporting long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria, the energy-producing centers of cells. It allows these fatty acids to be converted into energy.
  • Coenzyme Q10: 69% of fatigue sufferers report improvements with Q10. Coenzyme Q10 (Co Q10) is a compound found naturally in the mitochondria, the energy-producing center of our cells. Co Q10 is involved in the production of ATP, the main energy source of body cells. Co Q10 is also an antioxidant.
  • Dehydroepiandrosterone: DHEA is involved in memory, mood, and sleep. Levels of DHEA in the body peak when a person is in his or her mid-20s and then slowly decreases with age.
  • Essential fatty acids: flax seed oil, walnuts, Brazil nuts, Canola oil, Soy oil, olive oil, avocados, almonds, peanuts, fish oil…
  • Traditional Chinese medicine
  • Ayurveda: is a traditional medicine of India and is thought to improve digestion and eliminate toxins. Ayurvedic herbs may also be used. These include ashwagandha, amla, bala, triphala, and lomatium, which are combined according to the patient’s dosha, or constitutional type.

There are a number of treatments available on the market to combat fatigue. It is recommended that you discuss your symptoms with a doctor prior to taking part in any type of therapy.
