A feather duster is an implement used for cleaning. It consists typically of a wooden-dowel handle and feathers from either the male or female ostrich bird that are wound onto the handle by a wrapped wire. Dusters vary in size by are most often between 14″ and 32″ in total length. Some dusters have a retractable casing instead of a dowel handle. These dusters are typically used by rack-jobbers and truck drivers who need to dust store shelves, and like to retract the feathers into the handle to avoid damage.

Feather Dusters are effective in dusting tight areas, or areas where there are a lot of odds and ends to dust around. The individual feathers are able to penetrate through the knick-knacks and pull the dust out of the area without disturbing items. On large open surfaces or walls, or in trying to get spider webs in the ceiling, either a feather duster or other dusters like lambswool or synthetic dusters will work.

Types of Feather Dusters

There are several types of feathers used in feather dusters.

1-Black Ostrich Feathers–which come from the Male bird, and which are very soft with feathers that are more “stringy” in nature–which result in a premium duster.

2-Gray Ostrich Feathers–which are more stark than the black feathers. These are the standard types sold at many grocery stores.

3-Floss Ostrich Feathers–which are the most soft and delicate feathers, and almost feel like the tail of a house cat. These feathers come from the underneath portion of the birds wings, and are more costly and the most premium ostrich feathers.

4-Chick feathers–which are more pointed and stark that ostrich feathers, and are usually sold at very low prices, and are inferior in quality.

5-Other bird feathers–various other types of dusters are made with a variety of bird feathers, but ostrich feathers are the most widely used.

How Feather Dusters Work It is a misconception by many on the internet that feather dusters are effective by means of static electricity. This is a falsehood. Ostrich feather dusters are effective by means of the tiny barbules on the feathers themselves that act as fingers to collect the dust. They are often used around electronics because of their resistance to static electricity.

Cleaning Feather Dusters Feather Dusters are most easily cleaned by simply going outside and shaking them out. They can be washed gently under water as well (After all, they “are” bird feathers). Simply shake out as much water as possible, and let them air dry.
