Origin:The Marble handicraft of Rajasthan is widely acclaimed for its pearly clarity,luster and fine texture. If we go back to the Mughal period, marble was widely used in construction of buildings. Today you can see the beauty in Taj Mahal,the mausoleum supposedly built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his decreased wife. At present, India’s largest marble mandi(Place where they do Marble work) is situated along the highway near Makrana, Nagaur district of Rajasthan.

One of the workshops even boasts a feature in the Guinness Book of Records for having quarried a record 5,05,366 tonnes of marble blocks during the year 1998.
The products largely turned on a power lathe are produced in the city but sold here.

Etikoppaka: A delight to watch

To bring you the best collection, our journey started with Etikoppaka crafts, a village near Vizag. It is located on the banks of the Varaha River in Visakhapatnam district in Andhra  Pradesh.

Etikoppaka means, a group of houses on the banks of the river. It is famous for its age old tradition(over 2 centuries) of wooden carvings and artefacts, especially toys.

The toys are usually made of soft wood. Women and children pick it up from nearby hills and leave it to dry in the courtyards. The workplace and tools are primitive. It is a wonder that with these primitive tools, objects of such skill originate here.

Some salient features are

1. Craftsmen use rich colourful, Non – Toxic plant and vegetable dyes only. No synthetic dyes are used.

2. Safe for kids and babies. These crafts made under his supervision are exported to countries like US, UK and Germany.

3. Craftsmen adhere to high quality standards.
