Pesticide sprayers should be thoroughly washed, using a mixture of water and ammonia. Pressurize the sprayer and run the ammonia solution through the hose and spray nozzle. Rinse the tank with clean water, then pressurize the sprayer again and run clean water through the hose to rinse out the ammonia. Replace all worn or broken parts, then hang the sprayer upside down to drain.
Motorized equipment should be winterized according to the owner’s manual. If you don’t have the paperwork, start by wiping off all dirt, grease and plant material. Tighten all screws and nuts. Sharpen all cutting edges, then wipe them down with a greasy rag to prevent rust.
