Verificaiton of the Australian Labradoodle

The popularity of the Australian Labradoodle is growing steadier by the day across the country, which means so, too are cases of unscrupulous breeders who claim to be offering you an Authentic Australian Labradoodle but are not. How do you protect yourself?

First of all, you should know the basics. The authentic Australian Labradoodle breed was founded and developed in Australia by the Rutland Manor and Tegan Park Breeding Facilities over 25 years ago. The original lines were the Labrador and Poodle, but then to produce the consistent non-shedding, allergy/asthma friendly dogs we know and love the founders infused the non-shedding Irish Water Spaniel, American purebred Cocker Spaniel and English pure bred Cocker Spaniel. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the dog many American breeders decided to use their own labrador, poodle and other lines such as the cockapoo creating a completely different dog, but calling it the Australian Labradoodle. It is therefore very important to know the difference. All authentic Australian Labradoodles must have 75% or more of their original lines descending directly from the Rutland Manor/Tegan Park breed founders to be considered the true, authentic Australian Labradoodle. Anything else is just a labradoodle, and does not have the consistent desirable characteristics people want and expect from this wonderful breed. The popularity of the Australian Labradoodle has always been its own worst enemy and it has suffered as previous breeds have before it, by indiscriminate breeding carried out by people eager to cash in on the boom, as opposed to being dedicated to remain true to its heritage and the ideals of its founders.

In the United States, the only Breed Club/Organization that is dedicated and committed to the integrity of the authentic Australian Labradoodle as developed by the Rutland Manor and Tegan Park Breed Founders is the Australian Labradoodle Club of America, or ALCA. The ALCA was founded exclusively to foster and protect the original Australian Labradoodles that have come directly from Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeding stock, or their offspring. Breeders that purport to offer the authentic Australian Labradoodle in the US should be members of this organization, promoting responsible ownership by offering services to breeders and owners. The ALFA or Australian Labradoodle Founders Alliance was created by Beverley Manners of Rutland Manor in 2007 to ensure that the highest breeding standards are maintained by those breeders who are truly dedicated to the integrity of this breed as it was developed by the Australian founders. Its members adhere to the highest quality breeding and health standards that are expected of those breeding the authentic Australian Labradoodle.

Typically, breeders and owners will refer to their Australian Labradoodles as Fleece Coated Australian Labradoodles or Wool Coated Australian Labradoodles. These pertain to coat descriptions found in the Australian Labradoodle.

The Australian Labradoodle is working towards AKC breed recognition. For this to happen, it is vital that the rapidly increasing numbers of new Australian Labradoodle breeders who are emerging do their due diligence to research the pedigrees of breeding stock in the interests of staying true to the Australian breed founders’ lines and avoiding careless breeding which would ultimately lead to the ruination of the Labradoodle and Australian Labradoodle as a breed.

If you have purchased a puppy for breeding and would like to register it with the ALCA, you must complete all required health testing before breeding that dog. If the dog does not fulfill its health testing to be breeding quality, and you spay or neuter the dog to sell as a pet, you should register the dog as a pet if you are covering the dog under a warranty and the new owner perceives the dog is coming from your program.

The ALCA also keeps all records on bred Australian Labradoodles. This way, breeders and pet owners can do their research and ensure that they dogs sold that have been registered with ALCA meet the health testing standards as well as all other ALCA requirements.

Proper health testing and DNA profling records as well as a Pedigree database are there to ensure that people get what they pay for and expect when purchasing a dog from ALCA registered breeders. In fact, the market place will set its own standards and puppy adoptees will ultimately have the ability to select the breeders who are submitting their test results for publication.

So, ask for paperwork. Ask for Pedigrees and Health Records. Check with the ALCA to ensure the breeder has registered its dogs and certainly contact the ALCA if you are suspicious about a breeder or seller of any Australian Labrdoodles in your area.
