Juicing – Where to Start

There seems to be a war of sorts going on about what kind of juicer is the best. It’s understandable when you are considering doing something that so radically changes your method of nutritional intake. To go from cooked foods from every food category and source to consuming raw juice either as some of your intake to all of your intake it is best to know why you want to juice and what your goals are.

One of the best uses of juicing is to detoxify your system. Fast and then consume large amounts of purely nutritious, unprocessed and usually organic fruits and vegetables. This could be done by eating a TON of fresh fruits and vegetables but for some that doesn’t sound appetizing so ‘juicing’ is a great solution.

The Mayo Clinic’s Jennifer Nelson, R.D., L.D points out that there is really no sound medical evidence that extracted juice is any healthier than eating the fruit or vegetable and many juicing methods almost completely remove the fiber that your body needs. She goes on to point out that although this is true juicing is a great way to get your nutritional needs met and to try fruits and vegetables you wouldn’t normally eat. There is also a caution to juice only what you can immediately use as fresh squeezed juice can quickly develop harmful bacteria.

There are tons of juicing books and philosophies out there but for me it’s always best to keep it simple and make it mine. So, a little research online combined with a clear picture as to your goals makes the choices easier.

Make sure it cleans up easily since you will be juicing each and every time you need nutrition.

It must have enough power to handle the toughest vegetables without clogging or the need for lots of stop and starts in the feeding process. It is helpful to have variable speed for different consistency foods. It must do this without any heat, a big issue for some juicers but since no juicer on the market heats the juice while producing it to the point of more than like 3% loss of nutritional value, which is one more swallow, I am unsure of the controversy. Just choose an auger type juicer (most) instead of the centrifugal juicer. Variable speed is important when wanting one juicer for both hard and soft foods. Leafy vegetables and wheat grass need slower speeds than harder vegetables or fruits. You need a good warranty and a juicer that you can easily order parts for.

Start out with variable speed, over 500watts, auger type with simple parts and clean up and you are good to go. I will note here however that most serious juicers have more than one machine. They have collected over the years one for hard stuff, one for soft stuff and one for leafy. I am just saying…

In conclusion – seriously, if you are considering juicing for the first time, find a used juicer at a thrift store or garage sale or borrow one for awhile and see if juicing is really right for you before spending hundreds of dollars on something that could end up in the garage. Hope this helps!
