How Did Pancake Feast Come About?

The love of many for pancakes is rooted in an old tradition of a day of pancake celebrated all around the world. The Pancake Day, however, was originally celebrated in England and it was held on Lent up to Shrove Tuesday. The feast of pancake is celebrated in different dates in different countries, depending on the beginning of Lent.

Starting Point

Pancake Day or the Shrove Tuesday is traditionally celebrated before the Len begins until Ash Wednesday. As Lent is time for abstinence, Christians must make sacrifices. They may not be eating meat and dairy products for a while. For this reason, Christians had to utilize food items which may be forbidden during the Lenten season. To be able to use up their stocks of dairy products, eggs and fats, Christians mix these ingredients altogether to make pancakes. These has somewhat developed into a routine during Lent which explains the origin of Pancake Day.

Feast of Pancake Race

During Pancake Day, a game called the ‘Olney Race’ is held. The ‘Olney Race’ originated in Olney, Buckinghamshire England. One day in Olney, a woman cooking pancake heard a bell ring. Afraid to be late for the church, she hurriedly ran to the church wearing an apron and with frying pan on her hand. This was the inspiration of the funny and amusing race held during Pancake Day.

The Olney Race is a sport known all over the globe. It is also one of the most waited events in the feast of pancakes. To be a candidate, you should be a local housewife wearing an apron, scarf or a hat and bringing a frying pan or griddle. Racers are required to toss pancakes at least three times before they reach the finish line. Some kids also organize their own Olney race for the fun of it.
