Do you know how to help a choking victim?

How to help a choking victim, or How to do the Heimlich technique.
So have you ever seen someone choking? It’s a pretty scary sight and it can happen anywhere. In a restaurant, a classroom, a home, a business and just about anywhere else you can think of.
While I was writing a blog topic for tonight I was also on the phone. My girlfriend was on the couch, eating candy from Valentines. My candy actually that was little snickers pieces, hershey’s kisses, and packages of sweet tarts.
Well the name says it all. It was the sweet tarts that got her!
I was deep in conversation on the phone when she was on the couch munching away at my goodies. She was watching a show on her computer when she jumped up and ran past me in quite the panic. I had my earbuds in and was working on the computer but I could tell something was wrong.
I jumped up and instinctively remembered a 5th grade experience that flashed back in my mind. It was the same time of scenario. Working in class and having the room quite. As 5th graders we were not allowed to have any candy in class, which we did sneak. I remember a girl in class that all of sudden jumped up and ran in a panic to the teacher.
In front of the teacher who was also panicked now, she waved her arms up and down and tried to shout. It was no use there was no air coming out. It was the teacher’s quick reaction that sprang her out of her chair and quickly spun her around and gave her body a jerk, it was the heim lick maneuver!
A sucker that she had bitten the end off of and was trying to sneak got launched across the whole classroom like a cannonball! It was that day that us kids learned a very valuable lesson. How to do the heimlick maneuver!

Well that 5th grade training paid off tonight 27 years later!

So back to my girlfriend tonight. She jumps up runs past me in a panic while I’m on my phone and I see that she is distressed. I remember my training and instantly jump up and give her the heimlick maneuver. It was the same result. A sweet tart which about the size of a dime came flying out! She said that she felt it go shooting out and it has yet to be found. She remembers it saying the words Thank You.
So I’d like to know, do you know how to do this life saving technique? The Heimlich maneuver is easy enough to learn. Simply grab the person chocking from behind and use a small thrust under the ribcage and check to see if they can breath you may need to repeat the technique and it’s a little different for pregnant moms and for infants. Read more on the technique here. heimlichinstitute.com/page.php?id=34

I urge you to look into the technique and learn it quickly because it can save a life and you never know when you might need it!
