Buying Eyeglasses for Kids

People who wear eyeglasses are usually those who have experienced eyesight deterioration as a result of age. However, there are also a lot of children who are unfortunate enough to have impaired vision even at such a young age. Like older people who have the same problem, these children also have to wear eyeglasses. However, children may have different characteristics as well as different needs, which means that special care has to be taken to buy eyeglasses which are just right for them.

Parents and guardians who are buying eyeglasses for children need to keep these needs in mind. Here are some very important things that eyeglasses for kids should have.

Scratch Coating

The scratch coating is placed on the lenses to protect them from damage. Children are usually not that careful about their possessions, so there is a great possibility that the eyeglasses are going to be dropped or scratched. With scratch coating, even if something happens to the eyeglasses, the lenses would not get damaged that easily. Lenses usually come with some sort of protective coating, but since the eyeglasses are going to be used by kids, having additional protection may not be a bad idea.

Silicon Nose Pads

Silicon is the best choice of material for nose pads, because unlike plastic, it does not easily slip. Silicon nose pads are also much more comfortable, which means that the glasses will not cause any pain or discomfort even if the child wears them the entire day.

Spring Hinges

Spring hinges are much more flexible than regular hinges and they have a little bit more to give. They tend not to break even if the child is not very careful about putting the glasses on or off. Aside from this, they also spread outward more, so a child can wear the eyeglasses for much longer, even if they grow a little bit bigger.

Warranty

If eyeglasses (or briller as we Danes say) are bought for children, they should come with a warranty. This way, if anything happens to the eyeglasses, they can be replaced. A warranty usually costs an additional amount of money, but it is definitely worth it, especially if there is quite a big chance that the eyeglasses are going to be damaged in some way. Scratch coating usually comes with a warranty, which guarantees that the type of coating used is of high quality and is effective in protecting the lenses from any kinds of scratching.

Photo-Chromatic Lenses or Clip-on Lenses

These are additional lenses that can be bought to protect the children’s eyes from sunlight. Photo-chromatic lenses change in tint depending on how much light they are exposed to. On the other hand, clip-on lenses are similar to sunglasses that are attached to the frame of the eyeglasses.

Whatever accessories come with the eyeglasses, the most important thing is to make the child understand that the eyeglasses have to be taken care of. Although they may not be used to it at first, they have to remember that they will be wearing these eyeglasses for a long time, and as such, they should do their best to make sure that the eyeglasses don’t get damaged or lost. This is something that every parent or guardian should explain to a child who is going to wear eyeglasses for the first time.
