Family Therapy – Helpful Advice About It

Family Therapy is psychological counseling which may have one or more than one problem to sort.  It also solves problems related to children. Children with “scapegoat” problem are handled here where the actual root cause remains within the family. Eating disorders also come under this therapy where individual blaming is totally avoided. Other family problems like divorce, impending death of a family member, individual member with some mental or physical problem, alcohol, drug addiction etc. are also a subject of family therapy.

Other names of Family Therapy (nyttige parterapi is the term for that in Denmark) are Family and Couple Therapy, System Therapy and Family Counseling. It helps families and couples cherish their relationship, take care of it and develop it.

It helps not only solve one problem but most of the problems of the family but not of a single person. Instead on blaming each other and using harsh words this therapy helps discuss problems and the therapist tries to present solutions to all members and one is accepted will mutual understanding of all. Their main goal is to see the expressions and intentions of talking members as well as silent members. The therapist personally gives a chance to all members to present their views to reach to the root cause of the problem.

Techniques used: Therapy includes Counseling, Communication Theory, Media, Communication Psychology, Psycho therapy, Relationship Education, System Coaching, Systems Reality Therapy, and Attachment Focused Therapy. Therapy consists of 2 to 25 sessions depending on the seniority of the case. After doing group discussion differences get cleared easily. Therapy discussions generally focus on mutual understanding and interpersonal relationships. Here environmental and historical factors are also considered and the therapist may make use of a “genogram” which helps in elucidating the condition of the relationships across generations.

The distinguishing feature of family therapy is its future viewpoint and logical frame effort. This therapy is generally used to build a good and happy relationship among the family members with a very clear view towards the future, so the chances of getting into trouble decrease a lot. The next date of therapy depends on the seniority of the problem as the therapist needs to see some conflicts from the history. After reviewing all points alternatives are given to family members where the family with mutual discussion selects any option instead of going very weirdly angry on each other.

While evaluating problems all points have to be considered and not a single topic should remain to form a hole again, with the help of all members who evaluate it in a positive way.

Principles and morals in Family Therapy:

In relationship therapy generally covered issues are interpersonal conflicts, control, power, values, and ethics. A debate is going on different values which are understood in models of therapy and therapist role and personal values and combination plus clients’ perspective towards the scenario. Therapy should be neutral and not biased.
