Test results of medical check may be influenced with the fist clenched

In the United Kingdom, a biochemical expert named Thurlow found that the result of the medical check may be influenced if the patients’ fists had been clenched when the doctor take blood .

After he had checked in 200,000 cases of test results, he found that if people clenched the fist and then let go, this might result in elevated concentration of potassium ions in the blood, while high blood potassium can cause renal failure or heart disease. Thurlow said, other factors such as low temperature may also result in illusion of the elevated serum potassium concentration, but she believed that  the influence of the rise in serum potassium concentrations when take blood had been long underestimated. She held that on one hand, this rise might affect the test results and on the other hand it can also affect the patient’s health. This small detail in medical check may play an important role in helping to increase the accuracy of rate of the medical check.

Therefore, President of  the United Kingdom National blood Staff Association Hough believes that health care personnel should understand this, that is, the best way is to let the patient relax their hands as much as possible to when they are needled, not clenching their fist. Although it has become a habitual act to require the patients to clench their fists, the habit should be changed gradually as long as further study can prove that this detail can really affect the result of the medical check or even the health of the patients’.
