Cosmetic Dentistry and Dental Veneers

For people who have crooked teeth, gaps in their teeth, twisted or stained teeth, and dental veneers can create for you an ultimate smile. This treatment can take from one day up to four weeks and can even repair badly worn teeth to give you the smile you always wanted.

What are Dental Veneers and why use them?
Dental veneers are wafer-thin shells made of either porcelain or ceramic, which are colored to match your natural teeth and cemented onto the front of your tooth. The reasons why people may consider dental veneers vary with each person and include badly stained teeth, which whitening will not fix, teeth that are badly worn, cracked, badly gapped or chipped. For people with crooked or twisted teeth, the best option for you is to consider braces or Invisalign to protect the structure of your natural teeth.

Whether you choose porcelain or ceramic veneers is up to the individual but the most popular is the porcelain for their more natural look, strength and durability. Ceramic or composite veneers, on the other hand, do not last as long and have a tendency to stain but if you are on a tight budget, ceramic would be the cheaper of the two.

What is the procedure involved in getting dental veneers?
The first thing will be to have an initial consultation and examination at your preferred cosmetic dentistry so the dentist understands your needs and concerns. He or she can also explain the procedure to you and give you an approximate cost.

The second thing will be for the dentist to numb your gums with a local anaesthetic so that the reshaping and preparation of the front of the tooth will not be painful. To reshape the tooth the dentist will use a “burr” and file enough of the tooth to accommodate the veneer. If this makes you uneasy it is recommended that you visit a sedation dentist

Third, the dentist will take an impression or mold of your teeth using dental putty. The impression is sent to the laboratory to have a cast made of your teeth to use as a guide to fabricate your veneers. Since this process can take up to 3 weeks, the dentist will fit you with temporary veneers to protect the prepared teeth.

On your second visit, your dentist will fit your new veneers over the prepared teeth and do whatever trimming or adjusting that is needed. After your teeth have been cleaned, they will be etched with a special acid gel, which provides an excellent surface for the cement to stick. Once the veneers are fitted and cemented in place, a curing light is used to activate the dental cement, which bonds it permanently to the prepared tooth.

Porcelain veneers last up to 10 years with proper care whereas ceramic veneers only last for about 2 years with proper care. The point is that no matter which veneers you get, they will have to one day be replaced and have been known to fall off in which case you should save your veneer so that your dentist can replace it back onto your tooth. With proper care, good dental hygiene and regular visits to your dentist, your veneers should last a long time.
