Dargah Sharif – Pilgrim centre for all religions
Dargah Sharif is a major pilgrim centre for the devotees and travellers in Ajmer, which was founded by King Ajaypal Chauhan. It is one of the most important pilgrim centres for Muslims. The tomb of a Sufi saint, Khwaja Muin-ud-din Chishti is in the Dargah. The saint came to Ajmer (in Rajasthan) from Persia in 1192 and died here in 1236.
Dargah Sharif is located at the foot of the Taragarh hill. Situated in the centre of the site, the saint’s tomb has a marble dome that is surrounded by a silver platform. In the inner courtyards of the Dargah Sharif is Shah Jahan’s Mosque that is made of white marble. Having a height of 41 metres, the mosque has been built in Mughal architectural style.
The main gate to the shrine is the Nizam Gate, following which is Shahjahani Gate which was erected by Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. It is followed by Buland Darwaza, upon which the Urs flag is hoisted marking the beginning of the festival.
The annual Urs festival is celebrated during the first six days of the Rajab (which falls between March and July). During Urs, the Dargah’s main gates called the Jannati Darwaza (Gateway to Heaven), which normally remains closed, are opened for the devotees. The main attraction of the Urs is the kalanders from Mehrauli, called the friends of Gharib Nawaz, who walk to Ajmer all the way from Delhi every year.
The digraph (shrine) of Chishti is managed under the ‘Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955’ of Government of India. The Dargah Committee, appointed by the Government, manages its affairs.
Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli range and is located at the slopes of the Taragarh hill. The city is guarded by the mammoth Taragarh Fort which is one of the country’s oldest hill forts. A prominent attraction in Ajmer is the Taragarh Fort that dates back to the 12th century. It was built by Ajaypal Chauhan. Gold-plated wooden figures from Jain mythology are housed in the Nasiyan Temple. This temple has been embellished with glass mosaic, precious stones, gold and silver work.
Ana Sagar Lake is an artificial lake created in the 12th century. The Lake has a temple of Khobra Behroon on its banks. Daulat Khana served as the Royal Palace of Emperor Akbar in 1570. Pushkar Lake and Savitri Temple are the other tourist destinations in Ajmer. Located in Pushkar, Brahma Temple is said to be the only temple in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma.
Best time to visit Ajmer, earlier known as Ajmere and Ajaymeru, is during the winter season when the weather is pleasant and comfortable.
