Major report reveals UK could cut electricity demand by 40%

A major new draft report commissioned by management consultants McKinsey and Co. states that Britain could cut its electricity demand by as much as 40%, experts in voltage optimisation EcoAdapt (http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk) can reveal.

The research carried out for the report entitled ‘Capturing the full electricity efficiency potential of the UK’ and published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change for peer review, found that 40% (equating to 155 terawatt-hours) of present demand could be eliminated by 2030. According to the analysis by the McKinsey and Co. team, current Electricity Market Reform proposals only offer 54 terawatt-hours, which is just one third of the full potential savings.

The report looked at the three largest categories of abatement measures per sector, revealing that it could together deliver 127 terawatt-hours of savings, or 80% of what is possible. Examples of measures within the residential and services sectors include energy efficient lighting and insulation, while the industrial sector measures include pump and motor optimisation energy saving technology and, for boilers and other electrically powered devices, voltage optimisation technology.

While 75% of the demand reduction in the residential sector is already on target, mainly thanks to increased energy efficiency in home appliances, and 15% is on target in the services sector through current or planned policies, just 5% of demand reduction is expected to be achieved in the industrial sector through current/planned policies, according to the McKinsey report. In order to address this short fall, businesses have to commit to voltage optimisation technology, an investment which analysts are saying is vital if the energy efficiency market is to reach its potential.

This is the latest in a line of studies which reveals the increasing ubiquity of voltage reduction measures, particularly in the commercial and industrial sectors. EcoAdapt is playing its part in helping the UK to meet energy efficiency targets through its highly advanced voltage regulators, created with patented technology.
