Research reveals SMEs fail to maximise energy savings

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Britain today are looking to make savings in as many areas as possible, which makes new research findings revealing that SMEs are failing to maximise energy savings all the more surprising, explains leading voltage optimisation provider EcoAdapt (http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk).

Energy company E.ON conducted a survey of energy saving measures within SMEs and found that they are failing to capitalise on potential energy savings. According to the research, only one in ten employees in SMEs felt that responsibilities for energy efficiency fell within their remit. The survey found that many junior executives “pass the buck” on strategies to help reduce carbon emissions, reduce electricity costs and minimise energy wastage, believing these are issues which should be addressed by senior management or the owner of the company.

However, the survey also found that just 22% of owners or chief executives of SMEs think that it is their responsibility to drive energy efficiency measures such as the implementation of energy saving technology, and 24% admitted they don’t often think about energy issues within the firm. More than half of SME chief executives confessed they have never discussed energy saving with their employees, making it unsurprising that 57% of SME employees surveyed said that they were unclear about company guidelines on energy efficiency.

Iain Walker, head of Business Sales at E.ON was fittingly unimpressed: “I was quite surprised that the overall number of people taking personal responsibility for saving energy, and for passing on help to colleagues, is still relatively low. I think responsibility for reducing waste should start at the top, with bosses and senior managers passing the message to all employees.”

This is the latest of this type of research from E.ON, with an earlier study finding that energy inefficiency could be costing UK SMEs as much as £7.7 billion every year. There has never been a more imperative time for Britain’s SMEs to educate themselves about energy saving measures such as voltage regulation. The first step is visiting the website of EcoAdapt at http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk and discovering the substantial ROI to be made on installing its patented VO technology.
