The Scottish Reel

There are several forms of Scottish Dances around today. They appeal to different masses and require different abilities to master them. Some styles have been lost in Scotland now and others have spread all over the world earning massive popularity for them. They all have wonderful music.

The most popular folk dance in Scotland is called REEL. It first became popular in the 18th century and was widely practiced. It is a good lively dance form where people dance as groups. People get a chance to get to know their group mates and socialize more.

Reel dance is done in “sets”, a special name given to the groups. A Set is composed of three or four couples usually but can have more couples as well. Couples are made of opposite genders but women and men stand in line gender wise. The sets are usually are arranged in a line. The men and women are assembled in lines facing each other.

Like most country dances, the method and the footwork are of much importance in reel. They can be changed according to the choreography. Although well accomplished dance steps seem quite easy and simple yet it requires a lot of time, skill and dedication to master them. Fair amount of practice is needed by the participant to become expert and flawless in the footwork.

The importance of calculating space and time holds the key in mastering the dance. The dancer must take the correct step at the precise moment so that he doesn’t miss any step. One small mistake can make the whole routine look bad and the hard work of other members will go waste.

The Scottish country dance gained popularity during the 19th an early 20thcentury but has now lost its popularity owing to other dance forms being introduced. It is today only practiced in the rural parts of Scotland. Now it’s the age of modernization but keeping an old tradition alive is very important for preserving the old culture of any country.
