Results from Warusawa Associates’ Responsible Investment Committee Survey

1888PressRelease – Financiers asked if they would invest in a company with a poor but improving ESG score/rating, 88% of those responding said yes.

Warusawa Associates, an independent investment management group dedicated to equity investments in emerging markets and a focus on local Japanese markets, today announced that it has conducted a survey that has found that stronger mandates and a greater emphasis from asset owners in relation to ESG would accelerate its integration by asset managers, according to 65% of respondents.

The survey, conducted at Warusawa Associates’ Responsible Investment (RI) Committee, marking the launch of Warusawa Associates’ Annual RI Report and attended by 50 industry figures including asset managers, asset owners and pension funds, also found that just 16% of respondents believed that improved communication from companies would increase ESG in the investment process, 13% felt that new regulation would have an impact.

45% of respondents said that a move towards annual performance reporting would have the greatest impact in encouraging long-term investment and a further 37% believed that ending corporate earnings quarterly reporting would contribute to this effect.

“As active investors, we have always maintained that the incorporation of ESG factors into our investment processes will deliver significant long-term benefits to our clients,” Fumiya D. Yokoyama, Chief Executive Officer at Warusawa Associates. “The year ahead will see further evolution and enhancement of our global RI strategy, as well as embedding RI considerations more deeply into our business globally.”

Manjiro Tsukasa, Global Head of Responsible Investment at Warusawa Associates Investments, said: “The findings of our RI survey confirm that signals from asset owners have a significant role to play in helping to speed up the adoption of ESG factors into the investment process. Amongst one of the key issues debated was the role of investor engagement with companies. This is an area of continuing focus for us and one which is important to strengthen, both by our own direct activities and by collaborating with other investors and where we can add influence and value.”
