“In these times people are still getting married,” said Dole. “They may cut back on the number of guests, but they’re still going to have dress and wedding they wantcelebrity prom dresses.”Dole said the average wedding today costs between $20,000 and $25,000.
And even during these slower times for everyone else, Dole’s bridal business is thriving.
According to a survey by BRIDES magazine, despite the tough economy, 76% of all brides are still having large weddings with all the traditions.
Something different is that many brides are now forking over the money themselves instead of relying on their parents.
According to Get Married, a wedding planning website, 92% of brides are personally paying for some portion of their wedding.
Danielle Davidson, who got married last month, was one of them.
“We started saving early, pretty much when we got engaged,” said Davidson.
A study by Modern Bride magazine showed that instead of reducing wedding budgets, engaged couples are spending their money on items that they can keep forever.
Our Thanksgiving gathering this year was at the Wilton home of our granddaughter and her husband. It was good old-fashioned turkey and all the fixings. From the dessert table we enjoyed a delicious apple pie, all the more important because our granddaughter said she used my mother’s recipe and flaky-crust hints for the pie.
Passing on family recipes has to be one of the oldest rituals of mankind. Most old homes have collections of torn and stained pieces of paper with a favorite dish of a relative or friend inscribed on it. Some are hastily scrawled in response to a request, and others are carefully detailed on index cards, and there are usually many clippings from magazines and newspapers tucked among old cookbook pages.
