Are You Getting Enough Sleep? Survey Reveals That Most People Aren’t

Most of us realize that sleeping is not only necessary for revitalizing us mentally, but is critical to our physical health too. Therefore, the latest survey (titled ‘Sleep In America’) carried out by the National Sleep Foundation, a non-profit organization of researchers, patients and facilities, may cause you to be surprised.

The annual poll calculates that American citizens get, on average, just 6.7 hours of sleep a night during weekdays. Also, over the past decade, an increasing number of Americans are getting under 6 hours sleep a night. Those who get at least 8 hours a night is decreasing as well.

Living in our non-stop, 24/7, around the clock world, it’s hardly surprising that we sleep almost an hour and a half less a night than our ancestors did just over a century ago.

Laid before us are many distractions that no generation have had before. So, it’s not hard to see why sleep has gotten pushed aside. The widespread use of the internet, cell phones and other devices allow us to be distracted at all hours.

Looking at another piece of research, it was reported by the American Psychological Association that 52% of 7,000 respondents lost sleep at night as a result of stress.

Unfortunately, not getting enough sleep leaves most of us feeling irritable and drained, as well as burdening us with impaired work performance, subdued thought processes and questionable decision making.

Nearly anyone can improve the quality of their sleep though, by setting up a regular sleeping pattern. Go to bed and awake in the morning at a similar time every day- this also applies to days off, vacations and holidays.

You should ensure that the place where you sleep is restful, peacful and at a comfortable, constant temperature. Do this and you’ve a better chance of achieving the 8 sleep hours that you require.
