Electronics, Furniture and Decor – All in One
The fine line between electronics, furniture & decor has blurred to the point where it is often hard to distinguish where one begins and the other one ends. Yes you can still see all wooden furniture but then these pieces are now more akin to art than actual usable furniture. I don’t know when it started happening but it has already happened.
People love to show off their electronics, furniture & decor to their guests and friends. A great example would be the common desk lamp that we have on our tables. A long time ago, a desk lamp would be used to light up our desks when it gets too dark. Now, you see lamps which are more expensive than some appliances and are more stylish than things that you see in an art gallery. Not to mention that some lamps have more features than your regular household appliance.
Another great example to this would be the Television. When somebody used to mention TV, you’d think of a big box in the middle of the living room and the word decor wouldn’t pop into your mind. You’d think that the TV was something big and bulky and was something that needed to be hidden away if not being used. With the new technology that’s available, you can see LCDTVs or Plasmas that can easily serve as a centerpiece for your living room, on or off.
You might ask me when did electronics, furniture and decor start to become interchangeable? When did all of this start? That question is readily answered.
In today’s economy, vendors no longer see it feasible to release a product that’s purely functional without a dash of style built into it. The would have to spend as much on the design of the products as they did on the functionality. The best example to this would be the Apple’s iPhone, the that they re-release every year, but what has changed? Very Little! The software isn’t unique, the hardware was tweaked a little but still the hardcore Macheads come from miles around to purchase the newest iteration. The sole reason they do this is because they feel that must have the newest versions, they think that it is leaps and bounds better because of tiny improvements here and there.
Taste has also influenced the evolution of electronics, furniture & decor. Right now, the current taste in form factors is minimalist. With this minimalist taste, they try to cram everything into one thing and keep that one thing as tiny as possible. Why bother with a huge home theatre system when all of that can be achieved by a wafer-thin LCD TV and a tiny computerized box right?
I remember a time when people used to shop for electronics for their functionality, now they shop for the aesthetic value as well. On the other side of the spectrum, I remember a time when we used to shop for furniture for their aesthetic value, now people are looking for furniture with “added functionality”.
I guess that’s the wave of the future. Pretty soon they’ll have to create a new category and merge electronics, furniture & decor into one.
