Audition Day: How to Prepare

If you wish to become a popular artist, actor or performer, you have many options to choose from. You can be a Broadway star, an instrumentalist, a ballerina or a little of everything. But the most important thing to keep in mind is that there are no instant successes in the entertainment industry. The big names you see and hear about, like Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Charice and many others, became really popular through years of hard work and practice.

One thing that the above-mentioned performers have in common is extensive and intensive training. Although they were discovered and became sensations, they still had to undergo rigorous training to improve their skills and talents. Stardom could come your way too. Maybe you could improve just by practicing alone at home, but chances are, your self-training may fall short. This is when it’s time to do your homework and look into local talent agencies; they need to be honest and licensed in order to help you find the right jobs for your particular talents.

The best thing to do is to join dance, singing or acting workshops. It may not be easy as it sounds, because even in workshops, you still have to audition. But the key is in finding the right mentor who would teach you what you really need to learn. Unfortunately, there are many people out there who claim to be Star Mentors, but would only take your money for nothing.

It would be towards your advantage if you look for references and credentials when shopping for a mentor. You can also ask around and contact the people within your industry so that they can give you the best possible referral.

Auditioning is an important step to get the role you want. Charice auditioned for “Glee,” Renee Zellwegger auditioned for her award-winning roles. Auditions are the best platforms for you to showcase what you got, and to show your skills and talents to the people who need you. It is a form of self-advertisement, however, almost always, you get only one chance to show your stuff. So being well-prepared is very important.

Assuming that you are now ready for auditions, make sure that you are confident when going up to the stage, be confident but be polite at the same time. Be kind to the auditioners next to you; they might be your future work buddies. Greet the judges, and when handing over your resume, be polite.

When handing your song to the pianist, do the same. It helps a lot, everybody wants a humble artist. Being humble will actually take you a long way. After performing, thank the judges.

Although it seems like an obscure part of the audition, your resume holds a big part in landing your dream role. It is like your advertisement in writing, wherein you write about your skills, goals, background and experiences. Like being on stage, you should positively showcase yourself in your resume. Choose what makes you stand out, your edge over the other candidates. Your photos in the resume should also be professionally done, to show your most attractive profile.
