Preventing pregnancy with Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a prescription birth control pill with a high percentage of success rate. Many women in the US use this drug to effectively prevent unwanted pregnancy from occurring. The main advantage of Ortho Tri-Cyclen is that it doesn’t cause you to gain weight, which is otherwise a very common side effect of birth control pills. Another USP of the medicine is that it helps treat severe acme.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen: An overview

Manufactured by Ortho-McNeil, Ortho Tri-Cyclen is sold only on prescription. The US Food and Drug Administration is in charge of the medicine’s distribution and selling, so you don’t have to worry about getting duped into buying a fake medicine. It contains ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate as active ingredients. Both are synthetic female hormones that can trigger changes in menstrual cycle and also in your cervical mucus and lining of the uterus. Thickening of your cervical mucus will prevent your sperm from reaching the uterus while change in uterus lining will make egg implantation difficult.

Things to consider before taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen

Tell your doctor if you are undergoing any treatment. It is dangerous to use any birth control pills if you have cardiovascular problems, liver/uterine/breast cancer, genital problems and blood clot. Also let your doctor know if any of these conditions occurred to you in the past. The key to deal with a sensitive issue like contraception is frankness. So do not hide any fact from your doctor.

  • Ortho Tri-Cyclen is not recommended for pregnant or soon-to-be pregnant women. Breastfeeding women too should consult their physicians before trying out this contraceptive pill. The active hormones present in the medicine may affect your child’s health.
  • When you use Ortho Tri-Cyclen, be careful to let your doctor know if you are about to start with another medicine. Vitamins, minerals and herbal drugs in particular may reduce the effectiveness of Ortho Tri-Cyclen, and expose you to the risk of pregnancy.
  • Smoking is not recommended especially if you are over 35 years of age. It deteriorates your heart condition and increases the risk of of heart attacks, strokes or blood clots.
  • Using Ortho Tri-Cyclen alone is not recommended in the first 4 weeks of treatment. To be on the safe side, use other contraceptive means such as protective barriers (condoms) or spermicides. That will eliminate any chance of you getting pregnant.
  • Birth control pills do not terminate pregnancy. So if by accident you become pregnant, go and see your doctor immediately instead of carrying on with contraceptive methods.
  • In case you see a prolonged delay in your next menstrual cycle, visit your doctor because you may be pregnant.

There are certain conditions that Ortho Tri-Cyclen does not guard you against. For example, the medicine is no solution against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV. Using Ortho Tri-Cyclen is unsafe when you have, or had in the past, chest pains, high cholesterol, epilepsy, diabetes, seizures, gallbladder disease, fibrocystic breast disease, and depression. Some women have reported sudden mood swings after doing fine till the third week of treatment.
