Making the public aware of Taggants for Brand Protection

When someone says the word “counterfeit”, what comes to mind? Maybe you think of Rolex watches or Gucci bags that look just a little off. Maybe you think of spammy Visagra emails.

Those in the brand protection industry know, anything can be counterfeited, and if there is money to be made, it will be. It is for this reason that we were very pleased to see an article in the Daily Telegraph this week about counterfeit laundry soap being seized in the USA.

So great, the public is aware that low-cost goods will be counterfeited for profit. But what does the public really know about brand protection and the different options available to brand owners?

What if the public were to be made aware of covert brand protection options like machine-readable taggants? The education would include the following information about taggant technology including:

• taggants are extremely difficult to counterfeit
• taggants are very cheap to implement in a big production line
• taggants provide brand owners with a very efficient method of product authentication
• and that taggant technology is proven and has been in use for over a decade

Taggant technology has been used for product authentication in high-profile consumer goods for a long time. Fuel protection is one high-profile use for taggants. But lower profile items could benefit from brand protection with cover product authentication. Maybe it is time the public got more educated about brand protection and started demanding it from big brands.
