Increasing popularity of yam fries

Yam fries are becoming popular these days and are considered to replace the regular french fries which have heavy fat content in them, obviously leading the person who intakes them to become obese.

Although both sweet potatoes and yams are angiosperms/flowering plants, they are not related in botanical terms. Yams are a monocot [which has only one embryonic seed leaf] and are from the Dioscoreaceae family.

Yams vary in their size which might range from the size of a small potato to a big one weighing around Yams Vs Sweet Potatoes 130 pounds. There are more varieties, literally 600 in number. 95% of them are grown in Africa.

Yams are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, manganese and dietary fiber. They have very less saturated fat and sodium content. This particular mixture of low sodium and high potassium content is considered to be very good for health since it helps in balancing the human body with potassium-sodium content. They protect against osteoporosis and heart diseases too. Adding to it, yams are generally low in glycemic index than other potato products, which helps them to provide more good forms of energy to the human body and therefore protects against diabetes and obesity.

Everyone right from kids to adults will like yam fries for sure, since they taste somewhat similar to french fries but still are healthy in nature.

Yams have a rough outer skin which is pretty difficult to peel. This can be softened by heating it, after which the skin becomes peelable. The skins have various colors ranging from light pink to dark brown. The meat substance present inside have different colors too ranging from white or yellow to purple or pink in matured ones.

Yam fries can be stored in a fridge for about a week and not more than that period of time. Yam fries kept for a more than a week are suggested to not to be consumed and are recommended to be tossed out.
