Mike kick started his racing career way earlier than most of the jockeys. Born to a jockey, Mike Smith’s real name was Michael Earl ‘Mike’ Smith and was born in New Mexico.
By the time Mike was 16, he’d started racing. His license was granted and the racing career of the ultimate had embarked on its journey of more than 4900 races since the 1990’s. Mike’s most important milestone in racing happened with his victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas in 1991 aboard Fourstars Allstar. Breeder’s Cup winning followed soon after in 1992 and then in 1993 when he won the Breeder’s Cup Mile aboard Lure. Mike was omnipresent in the most wanted lists of all connections for the best jockey. He had also established himself as a top rated jockey with his Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey.
The year 1993 also brought the Preakness win under Mike’s belt when he raced into a seamless win atop Prairie Bayou and also set a record for maximum number of runs in a year at 62 for stake races. However he soon broke his own record in 1994 winning 68 grade 1 stakes. The year was another major milestone as Mike had been awarded another Eclipse Award along with Mike Venezia Memorial Award for ‘extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship’.
Mike’s performances were quite consistent with graded stakes such as the Travers Stakes, Florida Derby, Breeder’s Cup Distaff and Turf and international race, Queen’s Plate in 1997. However in 1998, two nearly fatal falls put Mike off the racing tracks for several seasons in a row. A major shoulder fracture followed by two spinal vertebrae breaks in a spill during the Saratoga meet resulted in Mike’s complete sabbatical from racing throughout the remaining of the 1998 season and 1999. However the veteran made a comeback known and recognized in 2000 with Breeder’s Stakes. He was once again honoured as a jockey with the distinguished George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award.
Mike was in great shape now and fully recovered from his falls. He successfully rode Azeri and Vindication to two memorable victories, the Breeder’s Cup Distaff and Breeder’s Cup Juvenile, 2002. 2005, Mike wins a Kentucky Derby eventually aboard Giacomo, sired by Holy Bull. Mike made the eventual hit of his racing career aboard Zenyatta who he accompanied to victory in 16 out of her 19 races. His Breeder’s Cup Classic wins came aboard her.
