How to Make Better Use of Your Time

We have all used the old saying why do today what you can put off until tomorrow. For most of us a small bit of this won’t hurt anything. For some this can be the difference between a productive work day and not getting the right things done in a work day. If this is the type of person you are it’s most likely as easy as fixing your time management skills. Fortunately for you, this is a skill anyone can learn. This can be done by simply putting alot of effort into your schedule and not allowing yourself to be too distracted. See the tips below for management skills anyone can use to increase productivity.

Don’t try to be perfect. Getting adept at time management does not mean becoming perfect. When you are obsessed with perfection, you end up making more mistakes than you otherwise would. This is just the way things are. If you are going to effectively manage your time and methodically complete your tasks, you can’t be concerned with perfection. Nobody’s schedule is perfect. Nobody’s skills are perfect. So be satisfied with doing the best you can. If you want to get better at time management, you have to learn how to relax and reduce your stress levels. Don’t automatically say “yes” to everyone. One of the biggest reasons that people have trouble managing their time is because they don’t say no to people. How can you complete your own work if you are constantly doing things for everyone else? If you have important things to do, get in the habit of refusing, as nicely as possible, requests for help. You can still help people out when you can. Your own work has to come first, though, and you aren’t obligated to put this on the back burner for others.

Don’t forget to give yourself rewards! Give yourself an incentive to stay on -or ahead of- schedule by having a treat on the other side. Having something pleasurable awaiting us will make us work harder. You are best equipped to choose the reward. The type of reward that will work best will depend on what motivate you to do your best. This gives you a pleasurable goal to strive for, aside from just completing the job. Rewards create some balance, so that you have more than just your work on your mind. Rewards keep things interesting and fun. Having fun actually helps you manage your time better.

Anyone can get more skillful at managing time. If you keep the above guidelines in mind, you will find that you can quickly develop abilities in this area.

The simple fact is that, for the most part, good time management is little more than developing good working habits. You will improve at this ability as you practice it.
