Who Knew Dance School Required a Uniform?

One thing that many parents in the Hazelwood area don’t always consider when looking into a dance school for their children is the type of dance clothing that will be required. Many a budding ballerina has had her heart crushed upon learning that she will not be attending dance class in a tutu, so, it is best to inquire with the school about their dance clothing requirements before expectations are set and then have to be dashed.

Sometimes the dress code at a Hazelwood dance school might seem a bit harsh or overdone to parents who do not understand why their child cannot just show up and have a good time. However, as with most rules, dance schools usually have very good reasons for their clothing requirements. If you do not understand why a certain article is required or procedure demanded, you can always ask the director of the school. If you ask in a way that is truly seeking to be informed and not as a challenge, you will most likely find that the school’s rule makes much more sense than you initially realized.

For example, it is a common dance school rule, not unique to a Hazelwood dance school, that ballet students with long hair have it pulled away from their faces in ponytails or buns. There is a twofold reason behind the requirement. First, it prevents the hair from falling into the dancer’s eyes and blocking vision, so it is a rule that helps to keep the dancer safe. Secondly, it allows the dance instructor to better see and evaluate the neck and back of the student so that the instructor can ensure that the visual lines required of ballet are there.

Other standard rules at a Hazelwood dance school have to do with clothing and footwear. Similar as to why hair should be pulled back is the requirement in many schools for leotards and tights. Posture, balance, and alignment are integral to all forms of dance. Form-fitting clothing, like leotards, allows the instructor to easily see which students need extra help and who has a particular move mastered.

Some requirements are just obvious, such as tap shoes for tap class and ballet slippers for ballet class. A Hazelwood dance school may require a specific color for each, often black for tap and pink for ballet, so that come dance recital time, no one has to buy another pair of shoes in order to match the rest of the class.

When inquiring with a Hazelwood dance school, make sure to ask about the specific hair, clothing, and footwear requirements for the classes that your child will be taking. If there is a requirement that you are unsure of and that you don’t understand, ask for an explanation so that you can be assured that your child will have everything needed for the first day.
