Costly Kitchen Remodeling Can Be Avoided

Everyone can pretty much agree on this adage that the kitchen is the nucleus of any home. It is where you eat and spend time with your family and friends.

The kitchen truly is the community gathering place in most everyone’s homes. So, naturally you want it to reflect your personal style as well as function at its best for your family and lifestyle, right?

The kitchen is also one of the most popular room choices for remodeling projects. Homeowners are more likely to either remodel the kitchen within six months of buying or remodel their kitchen with upgrades on appliances and kitchen fixtures and décor in order to fetch a higher sale price.

Unfortunately, not all homeowners do their research when they begin a kitchen remodel project and, too often, people they wind up putting thousands of dollars of money into it and wind up with results they are less than satisfied with. Sometimes their unhappiness with a finished remodel will be followed by a tear down and even more remodeling, adding even more money to the final price tag.

Industry experts project that the average cost of a kitchen remodel project is roughly $15,000. That is a lot of money to be spending.

So, what does it take to ensure you won’t wind up pulling more of your hard-earned money out of savings and into your project? At minimum, you’ve got to plan. You need a good layout that is going to accommodate your needs and design ideas, but you have to keep in mind that if you are upgrading your appliances in the project, and it is likely you will be, that you know the exact dimensions of the appliances you order before the project begins.

So many horror stories about kitchen remodels gone wrong center on the issue of size: stoves don’t quite fit the alcove you carved out for it. That double-door stainless steel fridge with a dual water dispenser you loved so much in the store is sucking up the space you thought you would use for shelving. The kitchen faucet is too large for the kitchen sink. And, the list can go on and on.

Storage space is a common piece of the project that many homeowners tend to overlook or under emphasize when it comes to the planning stages. Location for storage space is key: you don’t want your pots and pans too far away from the stove and your dishes and glass wear should ideally be relatively close to your sink and/or dishwasher.

Many homeowners love to put center countertops for bars or prepping. This is where things get really bad if not planned out carefully. Nothing is more aggravating than finding you’ve put a center counter in that makes it impossible to comfortably navigate your kitchen.

Counter top materials are also a key element of the kitchen remodel job. You want to take your time in selecting your counter top material, whether it’s tile or granite or some other material so that you don’t wind up with counter tops that bleed or soak up oils and other things.

In short, you should spend a minimum of four to six months planning your kitchen remodel. Work with experts at your local hardware store if you are a Do it Yourselfer, or hire an expert kitchen contractor who knows his or her stuff when it comes to pricing, materials and layout for kitchen remodeling and save yourself money and time.
