Applied Behavior Analysis aba and Floortime and Miller Method for Treating Autism

Applied Behavior Analysis ABA is one of the most popular treatments in autism. There are other approaches as well which are either a part of ABA or have been invented after ABA. The complementary ones often help the children better than using only one method. All the techniques and approaches followed by these methods help the autistic children in coming back to the mainstream life.

Applied Behavior Analysis ABA is a therapy that involves understanding the relationship between a child’s behavior and his/her environment. The therapy involves certain techniques like positive reinforcement wherein a good behavior is rewarded with the expectation that the child will respond in a positive manner from next time. The repetition of this behavior is encouraged through the reinforcement. Applied Behavior Analysis ABA utilizes techniques which help instill significant changes in the behavior of the child. With the use of this therapy children suffering from autism have gone through significant development in various aspects. The skills that this therapy seeks to develop are not easy but careful practice on a regular basis and organized classes effectively develop the skills.

Applied Behavior Analysis ABA takes into account the individual needs of the autistic children. Hence, the goals set up by the ABA therapist are different for different patients. The techniques used are based on the functioning ability, interests and the age of the autistic child. Since the family also plays an important role in the treatment, their preferences are also taken into account. While some children may pick up the social interactions skills quickly, there may be others who might not take some time to learn those skills.

Applied Behavior Analysis ABA is often coupled with other therapies like Miller Method and Floortime techniques to derive better results. Floortime is a therapy which involves the Developmental Individual Difference Relationship Model or DIR. In this therapy, the parents and the therapist help the child to learn communication skills through floor play activities. This therapy has also been effective and children have been able to develop some significant emotional and intellectual skills. The skills include understanding logic, complex communication, intimacy and bonding with humans, self-regulation and conceiving emotions.

The Miller Method has sometimes been compared with the ABA or has been combined with the ABA to derive the best results. This treatment was developed by Dr. Arnold Miller and Eileen Eller-Miller. Cognitive development techniques are used in this method. The Miller Method uses 2 major processes which aid in restoring the child’s ability to recognize and build his behavior on recognition and perception. The processes include modifying a child’s aberrant behavior into functional behaviors and introducing activities that are relevant to situation in relation with objects and human beings. A child with the help of this therapy develops communication skills using gestures and language. Parental assistance is mandatory for this program.
