What Are Kidney Stones
There are several types of kidney stones and each type is caused by dissimilar factors. The formation of all the types is similar, irrespective of the substance they are made of. First, the substance accumulates in the kidneys in the form of the small crystals. As time goes by, the crystals get more and more substance to become stones. The process can take from couple of weeks to several years.
The most common type of stones is calcium stones. Usually develop in young men. The major reason for that is that urinary tract in men is much narrower. Therefore, even smaller particles are not washed away easily. Calcium can also attract other substances to create stones, e.g. oxalate, phosphate, or carbonate.
Other types of stones are: cysteine, struvite, and uric acid stones. The latter is much more frequent in men than in women, while other types are equally common. Sometimes, the stones can be also formed by other substances, including several drugs.

Some of the general recommendations to preventing kidney stones are:
#1: Drink a lot of water- at least 8 glasses of water daily. All other liquids but water don’t qualify as water. For instance, if you drink 2 cups of coffee, a glass of wine, and 1 liter of cola you still have to make sure you drink 8 glasses of water during the same day. Large water intake is essential to wash away smaller calcium particles and thus prevent them from forming stones.
#2: Reduce sodium intake and increase K intake simultaneously. Recent studies suggest that lower Na/K ratio helps preventing kidney stones.
#3: It is possible to prevent kidney stones’ formation by cutting daily protein intake. It is especially important if you consume too much protein (usually meat) in relation to carbohydrates.

Take this issue as serious as possible and prevent kidney stones from formation. Once you develop the stones and they begin to move inside you, they cause severe and very sudden pain sensations.
