Kemmanagundi – The Ooty of Karnataka

Kemmanagundi is a well known hill station of Karnataka. Geographically, it comes in Tarikere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district and it is 55kms far from Chikmagalur. This place is located at a height of 1434 m above sea level. Once this place was the summer retreat of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and also known as Sri Krishnarajendra Hill Station or KR Hills. This place is alluringly landscaped with cascades, mountain streams, and lush vegetation along with the back drop of Baba Budan Giri Range. This picturesque hill station offers ornamental gardens, mountains with lush green slopes, deep valleys and rain kissed green forest along with the rhythmic sound of flowing waterfalls. According to legends, the name Kemmanagundi is originated from three different Kannada words like Kempu(red), mannu(soil) and gundi(pit). Together it means a place with red soil. This place is well mentioned in Hindu puranas. Once it was called as Chandra Drona Parvatha for its panoramic views and serenity. It is a heaven for nature lovers and adventurous people who love to trek. The soothing climate, lush green environs and picture perfect views provide a great option of good holidaying. This is one of the famous place to rejuvenate the body and mind with its breezy climate, sounds of gurgling streams and eye soothing serene views. The main attraction of the hill station is its enthralling climate and it remains the same throughout the year. This hill station holds few places to visit. Hebbe falls, Kallathi falls, Rose Garden and Raj Bhavan and Z point are some tourists attractions. Habbe falls is scenic place where water streams are flowing down from a height of 168 meters in two stages to form Dodda Hebbe (Big Falls) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Falls). Kallathi falls is the second most tourist attraction and 10km far from Kemmanagundi. The falls is known as Kallathigiri falls and Kalahasthi falls. Here, the cascade flows from a height of 122 meters and the nearer temple is believed to have been built by Vijayanagar empire. According to the Hindu Mythology, this place relates to the sage Agastya. Mullayanagiri is located here and it is the tallest peak of Karnataka which offers a mesmerizing view of surrounding places along with the presences of religious shrine. Rose garden is a well visited place which is well maintained by the Horticultural Department of the state. Z point is another place which experiences splendid sunrise and sunsets along with the veil of mystic climate. This beautiful charm makes this place a ‘The Ooty of Karnataka’. This place holds some unexplored natural places and its is quite adventurous for trekking. Mangalore is the nearest domestic Airport and it is 190 km away from this place. Bangalore international airport is the another option and caters domestic and International flights. Nearest Railway Station is Tarekere which is 15km far from this place. This rail station is connected to Mangalore and Bangalore. By road Kemmangundi is well connected to all places of Karnataka and the neighbor states. This place offers a soothing climate through out the year. So September to May is the ideal time to visit this place.
