The Number of Drugs without Prescription in Set to Increase Soon
There’s been a lot of speculation recently about the possibility FDA (Food and Drug Administration) may cancel the need of a prescription to buy some key medications. Public hearings are set to begin soon to determine whether FDA will grant more leeway to American pharmacists with regards to providing diagnosis for certain categories of patients.
We’re talking drugs that are used to treat diabetes and high blood pressure here. Changes may affect other popular medications used to treat asthma, allergies, severe headaches, high cholesterol, and a number of infections.
Patients would get a possibility to complete an online survey about their illness in order to get a clearance to buy the fore-mentioned prescription-based drugs. Another option would be answer these questions directly at the pharmacy to enable a pharmacist selling them over-the-counter with no doctor prescription.
A survey conducted amongst pharmacists pointed out to the fact that many of them believe patients with chronic diseases should be allowed to buy drugs no prescription. This category of patients is easily identifiable by a number of quick and simple questions. In other instances pharmacists can be allowed to extend the prescription for the drugs that chronic patients take all the time.
Criticism
The number of drugs without prescription can become many more soon as public hearings on the matter start this fall (2012). Some opponents of these new drug regulations believe that the government just tries to cut the costs associated with healthcare. And they do so by cutting the pay of the doctors.
They voice an opinion that only physicians can provide correct diagnosis for the patients and prescribe correct treatment for them. Allowing pharmacists to diagnose certain diseases may increase the number of cases with complications and inaccurate diagnoses.
However, other developed countries have drug regulations that seem to be far less strict than American ones. And this fact does not seem to have any negative impact on their populations’ health statistics. In fact, many countries exhibit better statistics.
Whether new regulations would become adopted or not is yet to be seen. However, it’s obvious that we will see many changes in healthcare sooner rather than later.
