Green computing is a marvelous way to save mother earth by using computer in a smarter and eco- friendly way. The efficient utilization of resources in computing is termed as Green computing. Research says that currently there are two billion computers in the entire globe and only if a fraction of this huge numbers take the initiative to use the computing resources in a smarter way then it would create a gigantic impact on the mother earth.

The usage of computing resources with least environment impact, maximizing economic viability and ensuring social duties explains the term more vividly. Minimizing the use of environment risky materials like CFCs, prop up the usage of recyclable materials, reducing the utilization of non- biodegradable components and encouraging use of sustainable resources. Implementation of energy-efficient central processing units (CPUs), servers and peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption and proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste) will make the usage of computer eco-friendly. Moreover the work habits of the computer users can be changed to minimize the adverse effect on the global environment. Below some steps are explained which when practice can save the earth.

 

  • Power-down the CPU and all peripherals during extended periods of inactivity.
  • Be focused with your computer job by avoiding intensive blocks of time leaving the hardware off at other time.
  • Though it is a bit costly but it is always advisable to use LCD monitor instead of cathode rays.
  • Power-up and power-down energy-intensive peripherals such as laser printer according to need.
  • Again it is advisable to use a notebook computer rather that desktop computers whenever possible.
  • Usage of power management features to turn off hard drives and display after several minutes of inactivity makes the computer eco-friendly
  • Disposal of e-waste according to federal, state and local regulations
  • Installation of alternative energy sources for computing workstations, servers, networks and data centers.

The computing industry is far more competent than any other industry when it has to face the transforming globe. Most of the computers enter a landfill only after a few years of service which is very much hazardous to the environment. So no matter it took decades to invent energy efficient car on roads, it  will hopefully only take few years to reach a state of affairs where most computers will be using far less power than they needlessly waste today.
