The new range of 3D animation production

It will not be exaggeration to say that we live in the 3D age. Take a look around and you will see 3D animation, 3D feature films, 3D games, 3D television and even 3D mobile phones.  The advent of three dimensional technologies (3D) has changed a lot around us. To aged people all this seems like magic. But a 3D animation is produced with help of scientific technology and planning. In the last few years, 3D animation production, has developed its own methods and standards and is on the way to clearly defining itself.

The making of 3D CGI (computer generated imagery) combines two separate filmmaking techniques: live-action and 2D animation techniques. The process of creating CGI animation is similar in certain ways with the traditional process of animation, although there are few subtle but important differences. We have to always remember that unlike 2D animation production, which has an established path to follow, 3D animation production, is still somewhat in the building processes. The use of software and details of the production process depends will be determined by the style and nature of the CGI show. However it is possible to form a basic outline of a 3D animation project’s production steps. In Computer generated imagery, unlike the older hand-drawn animation work, animators must develop a three-dimensional setting and surrounding with the help of the computer. Specially designed sets have to be built. In addition special lighting and coloring have to be done as well. It is almost like building a set for shooting of live-action films.

3D animation production is also similar to the making of live-action films in the terms of cinematography, spatial conceptualization, blocking of actor’s movements and scene hook-ups and. However for the transformation from idea stage to the screen, 3D animation follows the typical 2D animation model.  The animation artist and designers complete a series of steps that helps them to create and then to clearly define the image.  The steps are as follows- model building, designing, light effects, animation work, surface color and surface texture, rendering, touch up work, rigging, staging and finally the video or film output.

Experience of working on a feature film production project comes quite handy while producing a 3D animation work of high quality. A director of a live action feature sets up cameras and lights at different spots and angles, puts actors in appropriate position. A person directing a 3D animation CGI film also does the same things. There is a popular belief that since computer and software is involved in the process; 3D animation production is much faster, much easier and even much better than other filmmaking forms.

Creating works in 3D animation can be quite complex as it very technical because of the advanced technology that is involved in it. But it is easier to make a 3D CGI film now than it was 5 years ago. It is expected that over time.  3D animation production will be as common as any feature film production and we will get to witness more 3D magic.
