It’s not our fault if we were born with a nose too flat, or too wide, or too big, or too small. It only becomes our fault when we are offered different chances on how to enhance our appearance, but instead we choose not to take it. In the recent years, the field of cosmetic dermatology has dramatically improved and paved the way to the introduction of painless, affordable, and safe sinus surgery procedures.

In order to make the bone and the skin of the nose more proportional to the other featured of the patients face, sinus surgery might be called for. Surgeons can control to very tiny measurements, the intensity of the change this operation would have on your overall look. The surgeon’s main goal is to achieve your desired look while maintaining harmony with your other facial features.

So how is this procedure performed?

Not unlike most other types of surgery, the first step is anesthesia. Depending on the level of treatment one is going for, a general anesthetic or intravenous sedation will be applied by the anesthesiologist. Which approach they take depends on the patients overall health and the surgeons requirements in order to complete the procedure. Intravenous sedation is applies only to the target areas of the sinus surgery, while general anesthesia will leave the entire body sedated.

When the effects of anesthesia are already felt, the surgeons then will begin to cut the skin of the face. In Sinus surgery, only the skin on the inside of the nose is cut, so patients won’t see any scars after the healing period. It is a rule in Sinus surgery that to avoid making exterior cuts as much as possible. Exterior cuts can only be done when the nose reconstruction is really extensive.

When all the incisions are complete, the surgeon will begin to reshape the nose. Depending on the depth of the procedure, sometimes bones are broken so they can be reshaped. Other times the surgeon will use special tools to shave off parts of a bone to give it the desired shape. In more extreme cases the surgeon may use artificial bone or cartilage. Of all the steps of sinus surgery, this is the most sensitive and time-consuming part.

Following the reshaping process, the surgeon will close any open incisions, clean up and dress the nose in bandages. Post surgery recovery now begins.
