Bing Social Layer – The New Signals in Search results

With the purchase of Facebook, BING has added another layer to SEO-a social layer that further strengthens the move towards more personalized social searching.

Traditional internet searching relies on a set of hundreds of different  “clues” that help a search engine to identify the most probable information a person is looking for based on a set of words you enter into the search box.  Over time things like meta tags, anchor text, reverse IP addresses and mobile phone technology entered the picture to provide even more localized, specific and relevant search results.

BING has always been concerned with delivering highly targeted, relevant results for their users that help them to make better decisions. With social media they began to rethink their search model focusing on yet another layer to add to their search criteria-the personal connections we share with others. Why is this important and how is it redefining search?  The reality is that the world is not only a collection of information defined by how it is ordered and connected. The world is also defined by the relationships that connect people.   This means that searching has an inherent disconnect because the clues search engines generally rely on to help you find what you’re looking for are not truly representative of the human connections that exist and the role they play in making real life decisions.

Bing began to think about a model where they could make your friend’s opinions easily visible to you while you search.  The point being that if they could set information from your most trusted friends and confidantes at your search “disposal” search results would become even more relevant and personalized.  With their purchase of Facebook Bing has successfully added this  ”social layer” in search that is making the whole process of connecting information and making decisions more personal, more socially integrated and hopefully more useful.  Of course, Google has been experimenting with personalized search for a long time and is also doing more and more with the social search model.

Customer data supports the importance of taking personal relationships into account as a clue to deliver the best possible, most relevant search results. In multiple surveys 50% of people say that when they make a decision, they take into consideration the thoughts and opinions provided by their friends and confidantes.

Bing seems to recognize the power of this new social layer as a reliable way to do a better and more comprehensive job of predicting which resources and content are most relevant to you. This does not mean that all of the old SEO signals will be thrown away. It is just another way to zero in on what is most important to you. If something is important and attractive to your friends and family the likelihood is great that it will hold the same attraction and importance to you. The ultimate result is that BING will be able to deliver highly personalized search experiences and better tools to help you make decisions.
