Don’t Scratch That Itch

It’s a debatable topic: Which season is worst for causing itchy dry skin? In this corner, summertime brings heat, humidity, insects, and sun rashes to irritate and inflame sensitive skin. In the opposite corner, winter offers extremely dry, heated air; prickly sweaters; cold, blistering winds. Maybe not so much a debate as a toss-up (and that’s not even factoring in the allergy-saturated seasons of spring and autumn).

But whatever the season and whatever the cause, when you have itchy dry skin, there’s just no peace. Once you’ve started itching, your already inflamed skin becomes even more irritated, which prompts another round of scratching and redness – and on and on. Sure, calamine lotion can do wonders for bug bites, and a bit of intensive-care lotion can soothe flaky winter skin’s sensitivity. But these solutions are temporary – and sometimes completely ineffective. Before you go running to the local drugstore for some expensive, chemical-laden cream, try a few of these tricks for putting the kibosh on the itchiness.

  • Your clothing can be a big contributor to itchy dry skin. Stick with smooth, organic fabrics like cotton, as much as possible. Avoid hairy sweaters and synthetic cloth. Use detergents that are free of fragrances and dyes to wash your clothes.
  • Take a cool bath. That may not sound like the most appealing suggestion in wintertime, but you can also add some anti-itch remedies to a warm bath.
  • Avoid soaps and body washes with perfumes and dyes; rinse yourself thoroughly. As soon as you’ve bathed, rub lotion or baby powder over your whole body.
  • Place a cool, wet compress on the itch. The cold water will help with the redness and a bandage or cloth will keep you from scratching.
  • Steer clear of materials that may rub your skin or cause an allergic reaction, including some cosmetics and metal jewelry.
  • Finally, stop scratching. We know: It’s hard. But the more you scratch, the more the itchy dry skin itches.

Too much itching can lead to infection and eventually can make your itchy dry skin become rough and leathery. So do what you need to provide your skin some relief from the irritation – but keep your nails short, and away from your skin.
