The study shows that to keep a secret can damage mental health

A new study done in theUnited Stateshas found that keep a secret can not only damage mental health but also make the keeper feel physically tired.

In a test conducted by researchers atTuftsUniversity, some of the subjects were asked to remember an important secret that they were told, while the others of the subjects were asked to remember a small “personal privacy”. Then, the researchers asked them to estimate how steep a certain hillside was and how long a section of the road was. The results showed that subjects of the former group would suppose that the hillside was steeper and the road longer than subjects of the later group.

In another experiment, the researchers asked some of the recent escapades to serve as subjects and to make evaluation of the extent to which they had been troubled by their extra-marital behavior, and then they were required to carry out a manual labor, such as moving debris to the up floor, helping someone to move or walk the dog. The results showed that those who had the heavy psychological burden would think the manual exertion heavier than those with less heavier psychological burden because of cheating behavior.

The researchers explained that when the psychological pressure was too great, the people will concentrate more on the emotional changes, thereby leading them think manual labor is more difficult to complete.
