Justin Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion, won his heat in 9.90 seconds, keeping alive his bid to return to the Olympics after missing 2008 because of a doping ban.

In the decathlon, Ashton Eaton was on pace through nine events to break Dan O’Brien’s 20-year-old American record and still had a chance at the world record, as well.

Felix began training in earnest for a 200-400 double about a year ago. She tried for the double at world championships last year and ended up with disappointing results: third in the 200 and second in the 400.

“Last year was the first time attempting the double for her,” Johnson said. “That was eight years into her career. I’d have attempted something like that many, many years before that, learned from it and created a strategy from a competition standpoint that lent itself to eventually being successful at the double.”

And she apparently listened — Felix is now listed as “scratched” from the400m.

Christian Cantwell, the silver medalist inBeijing, is 32 and has the top qualifying mark heading intoEugene. The intriguing Reese Hoffa, however, is a fan-favorite with gold-medal potential and young Ryan Whiting won this year’s world indoor champ at the age of 25.

There are a host of other heavyweights withLondonin their sights, so it should be a dogfight in the ring on Sunday.

Prediction: 1. Christian Cantwell, 2. Ryan Whiting, 3. Reese Hoffa.

Chaunte Lowe is the top qualifier by a considerable margin and is this year’s world indoor champion, while 32-year-old model/jumper Amy Acuff is having a great season in a comeback attempt to try and win her first medal. She is third on theU.S.list this year, while Lowe is at the top and has had an admirable comeback from a premature baby last year that makes her easy to pull for..

”This is the hand that’s dealt to us,” Wade said. ”And I’m going to take this hand, I’m not going to complain and I’m going to move forward.” Wade said Heat doctors and trainers worked with him to find ways of ensuring that playing in the postseason would not make whatever the knee problem is any worse. He also spent time with his longtime trainer, Tim Grover.

”You know what, I was playing in a lot of pain,” Wade said. ”Obviously, my knee has been an issue. I sat down with the doctors a little bit during theIndianaseries and talked about the possibility of what’s to come. But I didn’t want to think about it then. I said, ‘Listen, let’s just do what we have to do to make sure that I can give my all.’ And they did that. I thank them for that.” He said he was sitting on his couch watching television on Friday when his thoughts turned to his hopes of being able to play inLondon, when an Olympic commercial appeared on his television screen.

There will be a lot for Hardy to prove inLondonbecause of her doping history. Once athletes test positive for a banned substance, they are looked at in a different way and face more scrutiny.

She will be competing in the 100-meter breaststroke, 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle along with two relay events inOmaha.

If Hardy performs well and wins a couple of medals inLondon, then her past indiscretion will be a thing of the past.

Michael Phelps is the greatest swimmer in Olympic history. Nothing that happens this summer inLondonwill change that, but this time he has a bit of a rival.
