Learning To Climb With A Rock Climbing Wall

Learning To Climb With A Rock Climbing Wall

Rock climbing is a sport that can be very intimidating at the outset. It is definitely a very physical sport and you might think that you are not fit enough to begin this sport. However anyone who is willing to put their body through its paces and have a full body workout will be able to rock climb.

The question of how to start depends on the individual, some people might like to go right to the outdoors. However a beginner might find an indoor rock climbing wall to be a safer and easier way to learn how to climb.

The Right Gym

Look around and you will probably find a couple of rock climbing gyms or at least a gym with a rock climbing wall in your area. So how do you choose the right gym? Firstly the classes should be very small. There should be no more than four people in a class so that each person gets plenty of attention from the instructor.

You might also want to see that there is more than one rock climbing wall. This not only ensures that you don’t have to wait around to climb but also that you have some variety once you have a little experience. Before attempting a climb on a rock climbing wall your instructor should go over basic safety measures with you.

You should also be provided with basic gear, avoid a gym that tries to pressure you into buying gear. Gear can be purchased when you are sure that rock climbing is for you. After a few sessions on the rock climbing wall you will probably want to try out your new skills on real rock.

One of the first things you will learn in a lesson is top-roping. This is an essential skill when you want to head outdoors. This means that a rope is wrapped around something at the top of your climbing route. One end of the rope will be attached to you as you climb while the other will be controlled by a belayer who stands on the ground.

The instructor should go through both climbing and belaying in your first lesson. Some instructors may also include rappelling in your first lesson. However if you are not taught this in your first lesson don’t worry. Once you have enough experience on a rock climbing wall you will be dying to head to the nearest rock formation and conquer that climb.
