Tying for Safety: Rock Climbing Knots

Tying for Safety: Rock Climbing Knots

In order to participate in the sport of rock climbing, there are some basic skills that people need to know how to do. One of these is to learn to tie rock climbing knots. The rock climbing knots are the main tool that is used in rock climbing since it is imperative to the safety of every climb. If the rock climbing knots are not secure or the right one is not used, then the person’s life can be endangered. There are about five different rock climbing knots that should be used to cover most situations that the rock climber might face, especially when climbing in an outdoor environment. When climbing in a rock climbing gym, the employees of the gym can help with the knots as needed, so the need to learn them is not as imperative as when going outdoors.

Types

One type of rock climbing knot that is used in the field is called the Alpine Butterfly. This is a Single Loop knot that is used most often because it is one of the most secure that can be found. This type of knot can be tied in the middle of the rope when climbing when obtaining an end of the rope is not an option. Many of the knots that are tied in the middle of the rope are not very secure, but the Alpine Butterfly is ideal for this type of situation.

There is also a Bowline knot that is used as a rock climbing knot as well. It is used pretty much everywhere in the world where people participate in rock climbing. This is another knot that is taught to beginning climbers early on because it is essential to allowing them to participate in rock climbing trips with safety. In addition to the Bowline, there is also the Figure Eight loop knot that is used in certain cases when on a climb. This knot is similar to the Bowline knot but is much stronger than the Bowline. It is actually considered to be about fifteen percent stronger than the Bowline. It is one of the most important of all of the rock climbing knots that are used in the sport. It is also very easy to learn because of the pattern used in tying the knot.

There is also a Double Figure Eight knot which can be used in rock climbing to balance the weight on the anchors when climbing. There is also a double Alpine Butterfly that is used sometimes when the climbers do not have the two ends of the rope to make loops in the rope.
